HP Photosmart A536
Released January, 2009
The Pros:Prints look bright and colorful, never washed out. Easy to set up, only takes a few minutes and is technically uncomplicated. Prints consistently and reliably without hanging up or jamming.
The Cons:Runs out of ink quickly, and the replacement ink is very expensive. Driver tends to give you pop-ups that get in the way while you're trying to do other things. Details sometimes get a bit lost and many pictures have a "grainy" look to them.
The HP Photosmart A536 is an entry level compact photo printer retailing at $120. Critics have praised its cheap price, ease of use, and lightness that makes it very portable. This piece can be used as a stand alone printer or it can be connected to a PC.

It has few options (ie red eye removal, date stamp etc), but it can print on 4-by-6-inch and 5-by-7-inch photo paper. The the Photosmart A636 Compact Photo Printer shares that feature, whereas the more expensive Epson PictureMate Dash does not. This piece prints images at a rate reflective of its cheap price: 0.7 page per minute, but with a good print quality.
The Photosmart A536 ships with five sheets of 5-by-7-inch photo paper and a starter tricolor cartridge that yields 10 to 20 prints, so new supplies will have to be bought right away. HP's pack of 120 sheets of 4-by-6-inch paper and ink costs $38, or 29 cents per photo--a much better deal than the 55-sheet pack, which costs $20 (36 cents per photo).
